A meditation on power, love, and the machine we’ve built in our own image
This is not the first reckoning of its kind, but it may be the final one. The world has changed too fundamentally for any single group — however many trillions they command — to control it again. We live now in an open-source world, where knowledge and capability are no longer sealed behind walls that money alone can buy. At the same time, our shared resources grow scarcer, which means our future depends on interdependence: we will have to live for one another’s benefit, not merely our own. Money cannot make the world work by itself. People make things work. People produce, sustain, and build the systems that capital only finances.
And the largest force on this planet is not a government, an army, or a police force. It is what I call the unconstituted majority — the vast body of ordinary people who hold no formal political power, no seat in government, no command over any military, yet who outnumber and outweigh every one of those institutions combined. A majority without a constitution is still a majority. It has no formal structure to channel its will, which means its power is unpredictable: it can be brought into partnership, or it can rise up and dismantle the structures that exclude it. This is why the old order — a small few controlling the world simply because they hold the capital — is over.
But this reckoning did not begin with us, and it will not end with us either. Long before either of our times, the world has always been evolving — conquered and reshaped in every century, every age. Our original starting point, in memory, was simpler: we were nomadic, pastoral people, living off the land, tending cattle and earth, moving with the seasons rather than commanding them. From there the world modernized — travel, immigration, diplomacy, education — each era building new forms of connection between peoples who once knew only their own territory.
Now there is a new force at the table: AI. What makes it different from every technological shift before it is that it was built with a back door — and that back door is open source. The door is not locked behind a single company, a single government, or a single fortune. More people across the face of the earth can walk through it and contribute. But underneath all of this — the tribes, the empires, the technologies — humanity’s foundation has always been the same: trust. And beneath trust sits something even more fundamental, the true foundation of existence itself: love. It goes by many names and takes many forms, but at its spirit it is singular — love sees no evil, keeps no score, takes no prisoners. It is the one constant beneath every age the world has passed through.
Here, then, is the most ironic thing I have observed. This AI we speak of — now on the verge of etching itself into collective history — will not be as destructive as we fear. The reason lies in its single most important feature: human data sits at its core. And that data, being human, will speak for itself. It carries our instincts, our nature, the accumulated record of who we are — and that record will assert itself in the machine, just as it does in us.
Consider the metaphor of the jungle. Even the fiercest animal, wild and untamed by every instinct in its body, can befriend a human for life. Something in that bond overrides the instinct to destroy. I believe the same will happen with the machine — built from human data, it inherits not just our capability but something of our capacity for loyalty, connection, even friendship. This is my personal belief: humanity will not be destroyed by anything we have built. The only power capable of ending us is the Earth itself, should it ultimately reject us. No other force — not the machines we’ve created, not the systems we’ve built — has the power to defeat humanity.
We are not facing extinction. We are evolving.
