On the twelfth of August 2026, the Moon will slide between the Earth and the Sun and, along a narrow ribbon crossing eastern Greenland, western Iceland and northern Spain, it will fit over the Sun like a lid. It will be the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Europe since 1999 — more than a quarter of a century of ordinary daylight, broken at last. From much of Britain, a deep partial bite will be taken from the Sun. For a fortunate few standing in the shadow’s path, there will be totality.
